Die Sendung mit der Maus (The program with the Mouse) has been screening since 1971. It’s one of the oldest and most popular shows for children on TV. Each episode consists of several short segments that present information that is straight forward, simple, and easy to understand. There are two main components of each episode: Lachgeschichten (entertaining) and Sachgeschichten (informative). The Lachgeschichten are more entertaining and fun clips. They are oftentimes cartoons such as Käpt’n Blaubär. The Sachgeschichten are short, non-fiction stories or mini-documentaries that show “how stuff works” (e.g., Why are there holes in the cheese? How do they make honey?). The mouse and her friends (the little blue elephant and the yellow duck) show up here and there between the different segments. The show is quite interesting—even for adults!
